Of course I switched video output only for the video player. In my case it is smplayer - video output options are in "Preferences > General > Video" menu. You can try `mplayer -vo gl` as well. But there was never any tearing in interface at my system.
The step that helped me was not only switching vo, but also (and mostly) upgrading the video driver. As I see it, the problem is halfway fixed in newer drivers, that's why opengl rendering causes no tearing.
