Eureka! I just discovered an even better workaround to the screen tearing problem. This solution also reduces the small amount of juddering that was present in the Mythbuntu MythTV workaround identified in comment #40.
MYTHBUNTU 11.04 MYTHTV VIDEO TEARING WORKAROUND
-----------------------------------------------
From the XFCE4 desktop use the following steps to turn on the compositor:
Start Applications -> Settings -> Window Manager Tweaks
Click on the "Compositor" tab
Enable checkbox "Enable display compositing"
Close this window
From the MythTV frontend, select the High Quality playback profile:
Start Applications -> Multimedia -> MythTV Frontend
Select Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> TV Settings -> Playback
Select Next 3 times
On Playback Profiles (3/8) page:
Set "Content Video Playback Profile": " High Quality"
Select Next a few times and then Finish
From my testing, the above solution significantly reduces if not eliminates all video tearing or juddering with full screen video. :-)
