I picked 800x600 because every laptop should be able to set that mode, but by all means switch it around. :-)
In the meantime, maybe we should switch to using my program for testing? mplayer is a huge codebase, and it's hard to tell whether any tearing is the fault of the player or the environment, while it's perfectly obvious what the program is doing.
