Excellent. During a distribution upgrade, firefox config files can become corrupt which is what happened in your case. The good news is its an easy fix. Bad news is your loose all firefox preferences including bookmarks if they are not synchronized.
To fix run the following command.
sudo rm -r ~/.mozilla
Start firefox normally now and the problem will be solved.
