Hi b52. I guess that using kernels with versions 34 and higher should fix this. You can get it from ppa kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ Try grabbing 35*, it is stable now. This problem does not happen to me since I installed a 34 version:
uname -a
Linux 2.6.34-020634-generic #020634 SMP Mon May 17 19:27:49 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My uptimes are long now, occasionally I have to reboot because of some power outages. Hope it helps
I did turn off screensaver/monitor sleep and use "xset dpms 300 300 300" instead in the beginning of every X session
