After trying out 2.6.35-rc2 and doing some research:

The bug about wrong mode (i.e. the kernel setting 848x480 by default) is still present.

The bug about garbled output is actually a timing issue, creating a newmode with all the same specs but the Mhz value about doubled creates a stable picture on my TV.
