Removing /usr/lib/dri/i*_dir.so (leaving only swrast_dri.so behind) still displays these symptoms with 2.6.34-rc2. Also during fbsplash (a gentoo bootsplash implementation) when using KMS the logo flickers noticeable already before X has started.
