Ok, it seems like the flickering has nothing to do with the videomode.
I fired up 2.6.32-rc5 today and took it out for a spind with video=1024x768 on the kernelcmd line, and added PreferredMode to xorg.conf to get it work like it should.
Console seems fine (checked with some graphical things that does not work in 848x480 mode), starting X works fine in 1024x768, starting xterm works fine, starting glxgears and the picture breaks.
My standard session is using OpenGL/GLX, which can explain why that does not work.
