Julien , That may work.. but the problem isn't solved that way... something is seriously wrong with compiz / gnome / intel 950 card... and yet it worked before.

If the solution is to use the older driver, then by all means have the old driver be part of the initial install. I noted before (and still firmly believe) than you can't have someone new to Ubuntu throw in that live CD .. then be faced with a complete lockup of their machine.

You just need one influential blogger to go out and say that happened on their box... and bingo.. Ubuntu will be known as lockup central.

Now I have successful upgraded 7 machines in this office to Ubuntu 9.10 .. not a hitch.. it's just that machine that runs the Intel 950 graphic accelerator. The problem is that it was a very popular card... so the chances are this is a bigger problem... much bigger than what is being reported because the machine locks up to the point where it can't report... meaning you're not getting any automated crash reports from it.. because the machine doesn't crash.. it locks.
