I have tested your freezetest kernels with good results as follows:
I am using an Asus M2400N laptop with the Intel 855GM, as reported by lspci -v:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 1712
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 5
Memory at f0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
Memory at ffa80000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
I/O ports at dc00 [size=8]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 1
Kernel modules: i915
Using the latest standard kernel (2.6.31-16-generic), I need to boot with nolapic and nomodeset and use the vesa driver (xorg.conf in /etc/X11 as described above) to prevent the system from freezing a few seconds after the desktop appears. The mouse pointer can still move, but everything else is frozen.
Test case: Booting without nolapic and nomodeset and removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf
freezetest1: In two out of three reboots, the mouse pointer froze, but the system kept on working (the opposite effect of the standard kernel!!!). The pointer was stuck in the middle of the screen, but I could navigate the system fine using keyboard shortcuts.
freezetest9: Works fine, no problems. Also works with maximum visual effects.
I tried to install the freezetest8 kernel, but dpkg gave me the following error (in Danish, hopefully you will be able to understand, I can see from your profile that you speak Norwegian):
me@my:~/Hentede filer$ sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.30-freezetest8_git6fd4693~gomyhr_i386.deb
