FWIW on my samsung NC10 acpi_backlight=vendor does not help. I still need to work with the setpci line. This is on kernel 2.6.31-rc4 and xorg-intel 2.8.0. Well and things work as soon as I put nomodeset=1 on the kernel cmdline.
