On my system (specs and info listed in bug 22241), running:
sudo xset dpms force off && sleep 5 && sudo xset dpms force on
completes without issue - the system comes back, fully functional, after 5 seconds. However, if I increase the sleep duration to 40 I get the same hang I get when Gnome kicks in DPMS.
