I have the same problem.

My current setup:
 Distribution: Ubuntu 10.04 (2.6.32-22)
 Display: LG L245WP
 Adapter: Radeon HD 4830 (Rv770 LE)

The display works just fine with Windows XP and older Linux distributions. My current workaround is to add the nomodeset kernel parameter. Without KMS I have no problems.
