Bug Description

I've installed the new Ubuntu 8.10 and found that the video rendering (movies) in Totem and Mplayer (Or any other player) is poor. I'm getting some off-positioned frames when playing the movies. I've attached a screenshot of the issue (Things look not that bad as in the screenshot. I took it while plaing the movie). In the earlier version of Ubuntu (8.04) I didn't have this issue. But 8.04 had problems showing blue lines in video window when a window (or menu) shows upon them, when compiz was enabled. But this issue is now resolved in the latest release. Hope these informations are helpful. I'm using Intel GMA945 buitin graphics and a Core2Duo processor with 1GB RAM. I'm using the video driver as xv (which is the default)

I assume there should be some workaround for this issue...

Wierd. possibly a refresh-rate problem or is it slicing the picture and shifting some bits along. Wierd anyway. Err, does it behave when you switch compiz off?

Have you played around with the gstreamer properties to see if other settings work better? I had a flickering screen until i switched the Video output to ... (no Xv) but that's mostly because ati-drivers aren't great just yet.

Hi Tom thanks for the tips.

But the flickering problem persists with all the video driver configurations and also when compiz is switched off. I also changed the refresh rate to 75Hz (using ViewSonic VA1703wb) where 60Hz was default. But this didn't change the situation. I also had this problem with Fedora 9 and OpenSUSE 11 installtions but not in Ubuntu Hardy. So it might be because of some bugs in the upgrades (Video transperancy now works with the xv driver. Earlier this was not possible) of the Intel video driver. Isn't it ?

Good luck with this, sorry i can't help - hopefully others will tho :)

I noticed that the problem is not present in my friends installation of Ubuntu 8.10. He is also having Intel GMA945 builtin graphics but using Intel D945 GCPE Motherboard whereas mine is Intel D945 GCNL. So the problem is not limited to 945 drivers. Isn't it ? If you need anymore information from his system I'm happy to post it here.

I repeat, I took the screenshots while playing (not paused) the video, so the problem is too maximized in those screenshots. I'm not getting that much ugly video, but its not a fine one either..... Hope this bug will be fixed up soon..

When I took screenshots while playing the video in my friend's system, I got an image like the one I got in my system. I thinks that must be some image capturing issue related to frame rates. But as for a human perspective view, the video playing is much finer in his system than mine...

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:

Bryce, thanks for the links. I downloaded all the files and installed them. But the problem is still there. I don't see any difference even after I installed the new packages from https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive. I downloaded the following packages.

libdrm2_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb
libdrm2-dbg_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb
libdrm-dev_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb
libdrm-intel1_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb
libdrm-intel1-dbg_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb
libpciaccess0_0.10-1_i386.deb
libpciaccess-dev_0.10-1_i386.deb
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.5.1-1ubuntu5~intrepid_i386.deb
xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg_2.5.1-1ubuntu5~intrepid_i386.deb

But I couldn't install libpciaccess0_0.10-1_i386.deb because the package manager says "a later version is already installed". Does these updated packages confirm the fix for the rendering problem ? Anyone got the issue solved using these packages ? But unluckly in my case, I don't.....

Please ask me if you need any more information. I'm happy to help....

Hrm, too bad that the new driver didn't solve it - just to confirm, you restarted X after installing them?

It may be worthwhile also testing the Alpha-2 LiveCD, since it includes DRI2 which may provide some performance improvements on -intel. Would you mind burning a LiveCD and seeing if you can reproduce the error on it?

Hi, I tested the Alpha-3 LiveCD today. The video quality is increased, but the problem still exists. But the lines doesn't look that ugly as in the Intrepid version..... It needs more quality in video rendering......

i've a asus eee 1000h and ubuntu 8.10 and the video render was poor too (with glxgears i got 560 fps +-, but if i move the windows the image will stay at the same place) and on youtube the videos played very bad...

i've installed the interpride debs from https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive/ppa wich upgraded my xorg to 2.5, now I only get 100 fps, but on youtube videos play real good, and the glxgears stop doing that move windows problem that stayed a fixed image of the gears on the previouse position, so is the reading of the fps bad?!

this is very strange :)

Sreejith, is this still an issue on Jaunty? We're putting a lot of effort into the -intel driver for the upcoming release, and we'd like to send your bug upstream if possible. But first, we need to collect more information. Please report whether the card works in Jaunty, and if not, give the new 2.7.0 driver a shot. It can be found here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

Thanks!

I didn't get time to test the Jaunty release yet. But I'll test it and put
the results here before 30th this month as I'm now away from my system
having this issue and get there only at 28th. But I'll try then and provide
as much information as you need.

I'm so excited to see that the video is now working perfectly in my system :). Hats off to the guys who are behind these updates to the Intel Video Drivers. Keep up the good work....

Its the PPA drivers thats working perfectly in Ubuntu 9.04 not the stock drivers...

Great! I'll mark the bug as closed then.

The reason it's closed with the PPA driver and not the regular is that the PPA is a "sneak preview" of what's coming down the road for updates to the normal repositories. If the PPA driver fixes something then that fix will probably end up in the mainline shortly.
