I had Google Earth 4.3 working well, albeit slowly on a virtual machine with 9.04 alpha 3 installed, but the slowness is probably just a consequence of the virtual machine. When I installed GE 5.0 it stopped working entirely. It now only shows the splash screen and then exits with the following message:
Warning: Unable to create prefs directory '/home/username/.googleearth'. File exists.
./googleearth-bin: relocation error: /usr/lib/i686/cmov/libssl.so.0.9.8: symbol BIO_test_flags, version OPENSSL_0.9.8 not defined in file libcrypto.so.0.9.8 with link time reference
