Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

I am using a Sony Vaio VGN-CR19VN laptop on Kubuntu 8.10-rc1 with all current updates. Sometimes I see strage artefacts. They are not easy to describe so please look at the attached screenshots. The screenie shows Avogadro, but those artifacts happen also when I am using KDE composite effects, at least sometimes. In general, everything works fine.

Also important, I think: When I am rotating an molecule in avogadro with the autorotation the OpenGL (it is a QGLCanvas, I think) the OpenGL canvas stays at the top of everything, it _always_ covers all other windows. I did a second screenshot for that effect. As you can see there Avogadro is _not_ the currently active window (this bugreport is) but still I see the OpenGL-Canvas of Avogadro.

This is my lspci -vx. Please tell me which other information you need!

This is the second screenshot I talked about in the bugdescription.

Perhaps bug 262758 is related (or the same)?

I read in some other places this: "This intel open source driver does not support opengl 2 only 1.5" This is an issue realed with the driver, I'm looking for some solution, I can't play Savage2 with this graphic card because this driver does not support opengl 2.1.

Maybe this bug with opengl is related to the opengl version supported.

In Gnome with Compiz I have a similar problem. Try to disable the desktops effects. It's work for me in render problems, but do not solve the performance bug found in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/262758.

I'm tried to upgrade some packages from Jaunty:

libdrm2_2.4.1-0ubuntu7_i386.deb
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.5.1-1ubuntu5_i386.deb
libdrm-intel1_2.4.1-0ubuntu7_i386.deb

But it didn't fix the support for opengl 2:

 glxheads
glxheads: exercise multiple GLX connections (any key = exit)
Usage:
  glxheads xdisplayname ...
Example:
  glxheads :0 mars:0 venus:1
Name: :0
  Display: 0x9cf7008
  Window: 0x8200002
  Context: 0x9d03768
  GL_VERSION: 1.4 Mesa 7.2
  GL_VENDOR: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
  GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM 20061102 x86/MMX/SSE2

This is definitely _NOT_ a duplicate of 252094.

My guess is that this could be the same bug as 330476 but since the screenshot shows a pretty different rendering problem I won't mark it as a duplicate for now. I think a patch might be in progress for 330476 though (if upstream commits a fix in time we might be able to get a patch into jaunty), see bug:

Everyone using RCs, ALPHAs & BETAs, please keep in mind that these are for TESTING ONLY!!! You need to remember that the testing continues after the release. However, by installing the FULL released STABLE version usually has these bugs fixed. Please reinstall stables & THEN report your issues. Thank You. Please do not contact me directly, instead please leave your questions, reports, problems, etc here so that everyone may benefit & help with your concerns. Thank You, Jay

Just to clarify, this bug appears in both the stable intrepid and in jaunty (and in upstream git).
