I straced the hung X. There are lots of
writev(31, [{"\241 _\275l\2 \1\331\1\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0"..., 527136}], 1) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)
in there - probably relevant?

@HDave:
You don't have to reboot. Just Alt+PrtScrn , Ctrl+Alt+F1 , log in to the console, kill Xorg.
