Also, I'm pretty sure that your compiz problem has its roots in something else! Cause my glxinfo also said that direct rendering was not enabled. But I was still able to get compiz running under aiglx.

But I must say something else too. I am using ATI 9800, so maybe we are not dealing with the same kind of issue. Sorry if that is true.

But I suspect that I'm right since I can't find

   Option "DRI" "true"
