I think Adriano's problem (shown in a youtube video) is different than the one I reported.
I just tried booting the live CD of Lubuntu 14.04.01 on the machine (which still uses the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel that works (before the system update), and it boots to the desktop with no problem.
The problem is introduced by a system update to 14.04 (or 14.04.01), and is already in 14.10.
