Since the last bug that was similar was caused by gsettings-daemon was somehow lost how it is supposed to tell xserver-xorg it wants to be informed reliably when the mouse pointer moves I honestly don't know if I assigned it to the right package: I think it was fixed on gsettings-daemon's side.
... and the credits for the workaround doesn't go to me: Found the solution at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24970776/the-mouse-works-fine-but-it-does-not-display-in-ubuntu-14-04-arm-beagleboard-xm after googling for about an hour without using the mouse.
