In my situation (and old GeForce Go 6400), with a fresh install of ubuntu 14.04 (some weeks ago all worked ok):
1) with nouveau drivers I can login but using dash hangs X (strange visual effects)
2) switching to nvidia makes screen blank at login

I only solved switching to gnome from unity.
