sorry I am almost 'blind' in trying to find the cause of my bug - the fact is that X's mouse and keyboard stop working and I can get back control of the PC remotely or switching to a shell (which is not always possible).

The bug still happens with the old i810 driver, so the intel driver is definitively not the cause. It just happens more rarely and you can use the system for a few minutes...seems that tooltips do trigger the hangup.
