Thanks Juan Pablo and Peter for digging into this and figuring out what's gone wrong here. It sounds like the fix should be reasonably regression-free, so barring any further suggestions from upstream, or other findings, I'd think this is safe to roll out for Gutsy.
Jesse Barnes proposed a patch to test with this issue, that adds additional i830_pipe_enabled checks. I've packed it for those who'd like to test it:

I've rerolled Peter's debdiff. It looked fine to me so basically this just renumbers it to -0ubuntu9.
