Maybe I have found a working compromise.
I have removed overlay fix from bug # 111257 which fixes the xv problem reported under bug # 141063 for me. Of course xv doesn't work anymore with Compiz but at least it seems that the xv crashes without Compiz seems to be gone.
The overlay fix isn't the general problem since it is still possible to get the gray blocks after several tests with dis/enabling compiz but this would be very rare behavior and not possible with disabled compiz for this cards. I haven't any crash through switching to vt while using xv under meta city without overlay fix. Since this crash happens randomly I can't be sure so it would be great if some more could test it.
Maybe this is the reason why this problem hasn't reported for i965 since compiz is disabled for them because of missing overlay.
Of course this would disable compiz on most out of the box working platforms but it could be enabled again after fixing the bug.
