Bug Description

Updated system to 3.2.0-39-generic-pae #62-Ubuntu SMP.
Rebooted and logged into KDE.
After a variable amount of time usually 1 to 5 minutes the screen would freeze although most times I could still move the mouse pointer. Had to hard reset to get the system up again.

Did 'sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel'. Restarted system and was able to login and use kde okay with no problems. I assume that the video driver now being used is VESA?

Reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel. Rebooted and then logged into KDE. Problem with screen freezing returned.

Run apport-collect 1158293 after a freeze, though it sounds like a bug we have already fixed in raring.

I reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel but unfortunately as the screen freezes I am unable to use apport-collect start after the crash. I have however got the Xorg.0.log.old which looks like it shows the problem. I'll attach it, hope it helps.

Hmm, I think you have a mixture of bugs. That last one looks like rc6, so appending i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 to your kernel command line should hopefully improve system stability to the point where we can look at the other bugs.

I think I am experiencing the same bug (Ubuntu 12.04 on a system with Intel sandy bridge). Perhaps I can help with providing some data during freeze?

This has only been affecting me since I upgraded my kernel. Running 3.5.0-21-generic on ubuntu 12.10 solves the problem.

i have also been affected by this bug, but i think it is not from xserver-xorg-video-intel. instead i believe it is due to some change in the kernel.
i have a core i5 based system using the integrated graphics, on a p8h67-m pro motherboard. i am running 12.04.
when an update came out in mid-march, the system would have constant crashes and hangs upon loggin in to the desktop. the characteristic behavior of the bug is that there will be graphics glitches, such as flashing, text changing to gibberish, temporary hangs that may recover--but sometimes don't. however, the mouse pointer always works.

i tried a few things to help isolate the bug, such as reformating and reinstalling ubuntu, trying different versions of xserver-xorg-video-intel, and different versions of the kernel.
the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel does not affect the behavior (at least compared between the original version in 12.04, which is 2:2-17.0-1ubuntu4.1, and the updated version, which is 2:2-17.0-1ubuntu4.3).
64 bit vs. 32 bit install of ubuntu 12.04 does not affect the behavior.

what does cause the crashing is using a recent kernel, especially 3.2.0-39-generic, but 3.5.0-23 also has the bad behavior.
in contrast, the original kernel from 12.04 (3.2.0-29-generic) is rock-solid stable.
kernels in between these 2 seemed hit or miss: up to 3.2.0-32 appear stable, but later kernels sometimes would hang at boot (at the purple screen after grub), or hang while running, while other times they would behave ok. however, 3.2.0-39 is terrible.

booting into a virtual terminal (text mode) is stable even with the new kernels.

i did manage to catch some errors in one of the sessions (either kernel 3.5.0-23 or 3.2.0-39, not sure which) in the xorg.log--here is the section (these were just after the modelines):

this clearly seems to affect a number of people, and is quite reproducible (at least on my system). can we mark this as confirmed? what is the next step in order to debug and fix this problem?

What is needed and how do I obtain it?

The principal information that I need is /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state, /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or /var/log/Xorg.?.log*) and dmesg. Please always file a new bug unless you are beyond doubt it is an identical bug - we will find the right the duplicate.

wow. this is obviously a problem for a number of people, so it is disappointing that the ubuntu developer reaction is to discount and invalidate this bug. we are all trying to help make ubuntu better, why be dismissive about that?

since the graphics is crashing, it is extremely difficult to capture dmesg or the i915_error_state. but i did get lucky and managed to get in a virtual terminal after about 20 minutes of rebooting and trying. attached please find the three requested attachments (next two in next posts--how do you add multiple attachments?).

Thinking about this I believe that the kernel update was the problem when my system was updated. I don't think that the xserver-xorg-video-intel was updated at the time.

I attached the Xorg.0.log.old above. It's all I can get as the system is completely unusable once it has crashed.

Would love some help with this as I'm now using the vesa driver to keep my system going - which is far from ideal.

I tried use the kernel linux-image-3.2.0-32-generic-pae, it's OK. I mean I only changed the kernel, so I think linux-image-3.2.0-39-generic-pae definitely has the problem.

I'm experiencing exactly the problem (bug) as described by annnomius, which has been 'refined' from the original post. Which thread should I be watching relating to this?

I can confirm the problem.

- screen freezes
- mouse moves, but does not change cursor
- Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not work (text terminal)
- Networking works and I can ssh into my computer

HW: Dell XPS 14Z
graphic: intel + optimus nvidia (switched off during freeze)

It happens randomly. Usually while using web-browser (that's what I mostly use).

As I can ssh I can try to get some log files next time.
I have noticed:
 /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state
 /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Let me know if you need anything else.

I have tried to kill some processes, but the screen was still frozen.
Killing X-server helps.
