PS: To add to the above workaround, using not just xvattr -a XV_BRIGHTNESS -v 24 but also xvattr -a XV_CONTRAST -v 3000 makes the picture better, and more similar to a gamma 1.6 corrected picture. (The default values are 0 and 4096, respectively.)
