I can confirm that the xserver-xorg-video-amd 2.7.7.8-0ubuntu1 package in Martin's PPA provides the libDDC patch.

This requires (as mentioned by Martin) explicit declaration of the "amd" driver in Xorg.conf .

There's still something outstanding in the xserver-xorg-core as mentioned by David pertaining to autoconfiguration of the driver choice (it continues to default to VESA). I tested both the current version in the hardy repository (1.4.1~git20080131-1ubuntu9) and the one in Martin's PPA (1.4.1~git20080131-1ubuntu12) of xserver-xorg-core.
