I have tried reverting the xorg.conf to automatic configuration (i.e. "Configured Device") and tried running X -configure, Xorg-configure and the assistant in recovery mode for Fixing X issues. even with the updated X core (from the PPA) which you recommend, auto detection/assignment of the AMD driver is not made.
