My problem was resolved recently with I think, one of the may updates.
I don't use the fglrx package from AMD anymore. Instead I use xserver-xorg-video-radeon.
You may want to give it a try. Uninstall the fglrx driver as described in the Installations guide
or try sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
Then reboot and your problem may be resolved.
