I am experiencing the same random hangs when using kwin with desktop effects: mouse movement possible, no updates or response of screen, "clean" shutdown only possible using ACPI (power button).
I am running a fully up to date Jaunty using radeon with EXA acceleration. Personally I find that the crashes do not occur (or maybe less frequently) when using XAA instead of EXA. I've been experiencing this bug for a long time (since KDE 4.1 was available for Kubuntu). I have frequently tried using svn builds of the ati driver (from xorg-edgers and tormodvolden ppa) but they always had the same problem.
Other than the random freezes, radeon + kwin effects works great, so it'd be really nice if that last issue disappeared.

I have attached my lspci output.
