this looks like the same (or at the very least related) bug:

also, using the driver here:

at least gives me a picture over the DVI..
however, with that driver, even though I have an image I now have the "flickering" and "tearing" problems mentioned in the freedesktop bugzilla.

I'm probably going to try and get the latest cvs and see if it helps, but I've never done this before, so wish me luck.
