Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Since I have fully updated my Intrepid system yesterday, Xorg did not start after a reboot.

The failsafe mode dialog showed up instead with the following message:
(EE) RADEON(0): ParseTable said: CD_INVALID_OPCODE

Reconfiguring X with the same dialog didn't help (X chooses "radeon" if not specified, anyway), but I managed to start X successfully with the experimental "radeonhd" driver after editing the configuration file.

I'm attaching the failsafeX-archive with current configuration and log, reproduced by specifying "radeon" again in the Device section. Hope this will get fixed, since I have little hope that proprietary driver will work in Intrepid, anyway.

My system is ASUS F3Ka laptop, equipped with Radeon Mobility HD 2600.
Earlier version of Intrepid have been running okay with the "radeon" driver for X.

I'm not sure 472252 is related, since that involves a configuration where both -ati and -radeonhd are used simultaneously, which is quite different from your config.

The next step for you is to collect a full backtrace. Directions for doing this are available at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing. That should give us a clearer view into where it's failing.

Hi, thank Артём Попов for this link to this bug ! (excuse me but i don't know how to pronounce your name :$ :shame:)

I've managed to start the desktop live cd by adding "Driver "radeonhd" in the xorg then by starting X "startx" !
So i didn't have the small popup that say to reconfigure xorg / xserver like in previous build ..(i used the 4th october one)... so as my linux knowledge are quite thin...i don't know how to report the xorg error!
But i can't past my "lspci" here:

Hi. While waiting for the fix, just a quick heads up:
I have the same onboard AMD RS690 as Артём Попов. I've been having issues with:

- Ubuntu Alpha 5 (I think) livecd - black screen at X start, I gave up then to wait for the beta
- Ubuntu Beta x86 livecd - same thing
- Kubuntu Beta x86 and x64 - could boot into it, but no text (I then figured out it was the huge fonts, actually)
- Kubuntu x64 alternate - could install, but after login I got to splash screen, which was then covered by portions of huge letters.

I tried getting the latest updates from console, an I did get some ati and radeon drivers among them. After that, I got to the LiveCD situation: I reached KDE desktop, but saw no text and it seemed to freeze when clicking anything.

I finally made it work by using the radeonhd drivers, as suggested, but they seem a bit sluggish.

Sorry for the long message. I hope it helps. Please let me know if you need any details.

Thanks
Sorin

RC livecd still fails to boot successfully.

RadeonHD is also missing from the livecd, so manual installation of radeonhd is required prior to starting X and the installation.

I think either radeon-nodither or radeonhd (by default) ought to be included before the release, otherwise there's going to be a lot of unhappy users.

Or at least this bug should be mentioned in the release notes (known issues).

Zaunpfosten > You have to download the packages of radeonhd manually (on packages.ubuntu.com) then install them on commandline and then to add manually radeonhd on xorg :/

Hadrien Dussuel: Do you mean that radeonhd is not even in the repositories now, so you can't get it with apt-get? That would be really bad for us users, as we would have to download it manually from console (?)

One other option is to install fglrx (I did), but for that I think you would have to manually edit sources.lst from console, so again not user friendly.

I think this is a big issue, and it obviously affects quite a few people. Many more might just get a blank screen from that LiveCD that was supposed to "just work", so they conclude that Ubuntu s#$%^ and go on with their Windows lives ;)

(Sorry for the rant)

I opened a thread on ubuntuforums.com about this issue (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=964587).

In short:
 * the radeonhd drivers _are_ in the repository but _not_ on the CDs (I checked Kubuntu Alternate + Live)
 * the Live CD does not work at all
 * One is able to install the system from the Alternate, but you are not able to get to the desktop
 * The workaround involves putting the .deb on a pen-drive, mounting it from console, installing it with dpkg and editing xorg.conf with vi

Summarized it should be impossible for 95 % of the standard users

2 Sorin, I guess not. We have:

xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2.1

Thus, ~nodither is going to prevail, unless ubuntu3 without "~" is released (which will supercede the "~" AFAIK). You should manually choose the right version in Synaptic (Package->Specify version...)

2 Martin, my card is listed in the bug description and further comments. For the record, it is
ATI Technologies Inc M76 [Radeon Mobility HD 2600 Series]
(ChipID = 0x9581)

This is certainly not a regression (at least on my hardware), since I could not even start Xorg with the previous driver version, as described in the first post as well. But I agree, that the update needs broader testing. Shall I revert "verification-done" to "verification-needed"?
