Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-ati

Hi,480
I have a problem with the Resolution or so. Ubuntu set the default resolution in GDM and KDM to 640*480. That wuldent be that bad, if the fonts would be normal. I will post a screenshot in witch you can see the huge font in the Titlebar that show up at the firs start. Now imagin that huge font into the gdm ord kdm login window at 640*480. The menus of gdm and kdm are also affected so that you can't change the session or so.
I also installed KDE to check. There it is even worser. All textes are that big! You can't even use the k-menu (it fils the hole screen and you see just a corner).
If you need more infos pleas tell me.
Using an amd64 3200
Ati Radeon 9600 Graphic Card
and an old CTR display.
I instaled from the Beta, and upgradet to the RC1.
Regards
Etienne

It seems like you have several usable modes, but it picks the lowest one.

Same for me. Laptop HP nx7300, i810 chipset. After manually specifying -dpi 96 parameter in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf for X startup command all goes ok.

Etienne, does it work fine if you disable Visual Effects in Appearance Preferences?

@booxter: Thanks, it also works for me.
@Tormod: Yes, if i disable compiz it works also fine. But i have no problems with Compiz ;)

The only thing that remains is, when i log in KDE with GDM i stil have huge fonts.

I am having this problem as well, I know for a fact that it is not caused by compiz. Compiz is not even loaded when the GDM screen is showing. This is a problem that has been plaguing me for the past few months and it is extremely annoying. Almost annoying enough to make me switch back to windows. I have thought about it many many times. Please someone find the fix for this. I think that it is definitely in xserver.

@alwayschooseford: have you tried to manually specify "-dpi 96" in your gdm.conf? It should help.

alwayschooseford, this bug report is about the wrong resolution. Huge fonts can be an independent bug, and should be reported in another bug.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.
