OK, my IBM X23 is now working using the binary drivers compiled by R.Rublack (thanks!)
That is the 6.6.3 ATI drivers with ubuntu patches, compiled for X.org 1.4.0.90, ubuntu 8.04. I manually copied ati_drv.so and
radeon_drv.so to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers , not using the package management. So they may well be overwritten on the next upgrade. I edited xorg.conf, changing "vesa" back to "ati" for the Device.
