I opt to commit Andy's fix to git. Nobody new is going to come up with a proper fix for these old drivers. At least this makes it work for a few, and it has no drawbacks. If it breaks again in a future Xorg version we have a better chance of bisecting the real problem. This also prevents users with a similar problem but a different bug from diluting this report and never find help themselves.
