I have exactly the same problem, using Ubuntu 8.04 and the opensource Radeon driver. I have banged my head against this problem many many hours. changing cables and such. I have not yet tried the xrandr workaround as stated here, but I will do that later today.

Is the version of xserver-xorg-video-ati updated in the newest version of Ubuntu?
