i was finally able to ssh in and i didn't see any errors produced during the hang, it must not have time to write them to the hard drive.
tormod, yes i've used both ati and radeon.
i was messing around with the framebuffer modules and by using fbcon with my custom kernel image i was able to get into my desktop and was able to switch tty's (which is normally where i hang if i'm fortunate enough to make it into the desktop), but when i rebooted it was back to the same old blank screen.
the locking up inside the desktop was happening in edgy after roughly april 13th, but no blank/black screens like this. i didn't have time to make a report due to finals.
