Bug Description

My laptop (HP Pavilion 15-ab141na) is simply booting to a black screen on 16.04, the backlight is on but there is no display. Sound is working so I can hear the ubuntu logon noise and can SSH from another machine.

During boot the screen on the laptop looks as if it is flashing off and on.

WORKAROUND: Use kernel parameter:
nomodeset

uname -a

Linux hp-grey 4.4.0-28-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 24 10:09:13 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have tried the following mainline kernels and they don't seem to have made any difference

v4.7-rc5-yakkety/
v4.4.4-wily/

Running with nomodeset allows the GUI to show up in 800x600 but doesn't allow any resolution change.

Output of xrandr --listproviders just says "Can't open display "

Please let me know if I can be of any further help

James

Just to update I have tried the nomodeset parameter previously (sorry hadn't put that in the description)

The OS does load and you get visuals but its using the software rendering and will only allow 800x600 resolution and refuses to change to anything other than that.

Just to note I have tried the AMDGPU-PRO beta driver v16.30 (just on the off-chance) since posting, and it does allow you to boot with full 1920x1080 resolution to the logon screen. Attempting to log on either causes a complete crash or display corruption though.

I will look at the BIOS update in the meantime :)

Any thing else I can do please let me know as this Ubuntu install isn't doing anything else at the moment so I can play ;)

Can confirm I am now on the latest BIOS, F19 as of writing. Still seeing the same issue, OS boots into a black screen, again ubuntu boot sounds still are played so the laptop is working normally bar the graphics.

I've just ran a full update as of today and rerun the apport info

J have the same problems.

Nomodeset - 800x600 -is no solution for working.
When starting life-system from USB in CSM mode, nomodeset, I get optimal resolution for my screen - 1600x900.
But CSM-mode installation is no option for installation.

Same Problems and same "nomodeset" results with Kubuntu 16.10 life-system.

FFab, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu repository kernel (not mainline/upstream) via a terminal:

Hi Christopher,

How can I assist further with this? A lot of the original attachments my system uploaded via the bug panel have been deleted from this report.

Just so you know the only way you can get the system to boot to being usable is via nomodeset which I believe won't load the AMDGPU driver at all (assuming this is valid with ubuntu as well https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU)

I have cross posted this in the freedesktop bugzilla as well as I don't believe this is an ubuntu specific bug.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97605

I have also tried with 16.10 recently but get the same results as 16.04 so it doesn't seem to be fixed in the later kernel :(

Regards
James

This is presumably because this one has the importance set to "low", while the bug is preventing users to boot their systems.

This is another example of why importance is more meaningful when based in impact only. With your permission I'm setting it here based on that criteria.

Attached is
copy of displayed messages (pdf)

Copy of the messages:
During booting messages are displayed for about half a second.
The attached copies are digit fotos taken
during several boot runs.
To get usable fotos the kernel parameter boot_delay was set to values between 0 and 1000 ms.

I assume apport-bug update is not needed.
