Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Tapping and dragging works, but edge scrolling does not work.

Strangely all touchpad events are generated from not "AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint"(event 8) but "PS/2 Mouse"(event 7).

Last tested: linux-image-3.0.0-11-generic-pae 3.0.0-11.18 on Oneiric

Slightly unrelated but It looks like there are many bugs for -synaptics that may be duplicates for this one.

Robert Hooker (sarvatt) wrote :

The "touchpad" control panel name in gnome is deceptive, in reality it only works for devices that use the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics driver. These newer Alps touchpads use a undocumented and proprietary protocol that ALPS will not open source and has not been reverse engineered yet, as such they are only supported as generic PS/2 mice in linux. We do carry a patch in the kernel that quirks them to a ImPS/2 device on Dell machines for scroll support but it still is a device that uses the evdev X driver and changing settings in the synaptics touchpad control panel will not be possible. With the dell quirk it is not even possible to disable scrolling on the fly or adjust the features so it is very far from optimal. I'm not sure if the kernel patch for the dells can be extended to these other devices or not, that needs investigation.

I've uploaded a test kernel that I'm hoping will fix this issue for the FUJITSU FMVNP2PL. The test kernels are located in http://people.canonical.com/~bradf/lp747092.

Let me know if this solves the problem or not for that system.

Thanks,

Although I tried to test the kernel, it is for Natty. Currently I don't have Natty environment for the machine.
It would be appreciated if you prepare Oneiric kernel as well.

To everyone experiencing this issue:

Please add a comment which clearly states which kernel you are running, the vendor and model name of your system (as they would be found on the vendors website) and the results from "cat /sys/class/dmi/id/*".

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel currently in the release pocket than the one you tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Nobuto MURATA, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I'm the original reporter of this bug and sorry for my inactivity for a while.
I have upgraded my FUJITSU FMVNP2PL to precise, then this bug is no longer reproducible. Edge scrolling works.

I will mark this bug "Invalid" as "no longer reproducible".
If you're still experiencing this bug and your machine is different from mine, please file a new bug.
