If you get psmouse loaded, and synclient shows output, then I'd say you probably need to ask for help from Ubuntu users, since not all versions of linux will have exactly the same problems.

If, after a system restart, you can do this to see if the psmouse module is running.
$ /sbin/lsmod
will list all modules loaded. make sure psmouse is in there.
If not, run
$ /sbin/modprobe psmouse
When I force the mouse driver to be removed and restarted, I see this in dmesg output:
