I have seen this same problem on a new Dell XPS M1530 on which I installed Ubuntu 8.04RC. Everything appeared to work fine until I used the 'Mouse' preferences to attempt to change the mouse speed. Initially no effect, so I restarted X (ctrl-alt-backspace). After that the trackpad was uber-sensitive/touchy/jumpy and seemed to trigger spurious keystroke and/or mouse-clicks. Almost any attempt to move the pointer using the trackpad results in the mouse pointer flying to the bottom left and new GNOME panels being added to my desktop. I rebooted with Vista (installed in the factory) and no problems occur at all there, so it's not a hardware problem. I plugged in a USB mouse and it works fine (and in fact is the only way I can use the system currently).
