I'm one of the original reporters of this problem (not using tvtime). Since then I've switched to Windows 7 on that computer (Thinkpad T61). The shift key still get stuck in random occasions, and behaves as I described above! Ergo, it seems, at least in my case, that it is a real low layer (BIOS?) problem and not an Ubuntu fault.
