I hit this issue today, and i'm pretty sure that i did *not* actually hold down shift for more than 10 seconds. Quite possibly, i held down shift for a couple seconds, and while i did so, there was a successful keyboard grab from an XClient.

at any rate, it seems like it might be possible to miss the shift release event.
