A tone would be completely useless for me, unless that's a "visual tone" (the speakers are off most of the time). But if it has to be something visual, it should be something informative.

Yes, exactly. But the information should be available even if one doesn't use a desktop environment (just a window manager), or you should shift the entire feature to the desktop environment.
