Um, I mixed up Sticky Keys and Slow Keys, sorry. So modifiers are not
involved --- the point is that the keyboard really does stop accepting
normal input unless you hold down each key for a while.

Another quick datum: on Mac OS X, holding down the Return key for
4 seconds produces a beep. Continuing to hold it for 4 more seconds
turns on Slow Keys. Enter seems like a less common key to hold down
than Shift and the beep provides useful feedback, so one nice approach
might be to copy them.
