Tried both the commercial and Ubuntu fglrx drivers.
Tried franceloc's addition to the xorg.conf.
Still have the lockups as stated above.
"fglrxinfo" in a terminal returns:
display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS 200 Series Generic OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)
Downgrading to the "ati" driver cures the lockups, but then I lose 3d acceleration.
