Only I can load the desktop in failsafe gnome.

gnome version 2.19.6

if you require more information tell me know

is this reproducible?

sudo apt-get update

could you specify more details please, for instance the graphic card you're using, does this happens when you boot the cd or only after you install gutsy to the hard drive, etc.

when the desktop doesn't finish, does the applications of the gnome desktop run?, this you can check with the ps command from the command line by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1, login and execute the commands, then you can go back to the graphic mode by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F7.

when the desktop doesn't finish to load, you mean that only the wallpaper is shown?, no just a plain color in the background.
if after this, you go to the command line "Ctrl + ALt + F1" and execute the following command:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

and you try to logging from the graphic mode, does happens again?, or the desktop load as should.

graphics card: ati radeon xpress 200m

this happens only when gutsy is installed to the hard drive and i update the system
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

if i login of normal way the desktop doesn't load, then the login window appears again and when I type Ctrl + Alt + F1 the system is blocked, and only works Ctrl + Alt + Del

then the problem is either in the kernel module (not probable) or the xserver-xorg-driver-ati package (most probable), i'm changing now to xserver-xorg-driver-ati since that's seems to be the problem.

Please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old just after switching to "failsafe" after trying normal booting. (The point is to get a log file from when running the failing "ati" driver, not the failsafe "vesa" driver.)

Sometimes one have to reinstall the mesa packages after having used the "Restricted" (proprietary) fglrx drivers. Please try: sudo apt-get install -reinstall libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx

If that doesn't help, try disabling DRI by adding to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

The support for these cards is pretty recent, especially when it comes to DRI. See also https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6149

For tribe 5, boot in "failsafe" (vesa) mode if that works, and please test the newer xserver and xserver-xorg-video-ati from http://users.tkk.fi/~tjaalton/dpkg/ . Remember to switch back to "ati" driver after installing these packages. "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg -phigh" will give you a menu choice where you select ati, or use the new graphics driver selection in System->Administration (although I am not sure how reliable that one is). It would be very good if you can provide a Xorg.0.log from using the newest versions.

See also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge for more on testing versions.

I can confirm this bug. After installing the stock gutsy tribe 4 cd, doing an update and upgrade, I get a black screen and a crashed X (system hangs) until I boot in safe mode. Fglrx works obviously.

I have tried the packages as suggested above: booting with those packages results in a very garbled screen, but a perfectly visible mouse cursor (the same results as many of the bug reports with ati driver). CTRL-ALT-Backspace or CTRL-ALT-F1 results in a crashed X (system hangs)

The Xorg.0.log resulting from this is attached. Hopefully it is useful.

Looking forward to dump fglrx and xgl crap and use free drivers on my notebook! Keep it up!!

Dimitri

dimitri:

the log indicates that you are using the tv-out of your card, is that right? If yes, unplug it and try again. Also, remove/comment out any Options you might have set for the driver, that could help.

There's also a newer version which has two patches from upstream, but I'm not sure they help here.

dimitri (dimitri-vanlanduyt) wrote :

Negative on both comments; my relevant xorg.conf section contains no additional options, nor was my TV-out in use (no options in xorg.conf, and nothing plugged in):

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200M]"
        Driver "ati"
        BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
EndSection

Please let me know if you require more information. I am willing to try newer packages if you point me to them.

Best regards,

Dimitri

I'm hitting this as well.

I've been tracking gutsy for a few months now and last night the upgrade broke my Kubuntu desktop.

the kdm login screen is fine but once KDE starts to load the graphics go really screwy. All the icons seem to be 10 times the normal size and I only see a small portion of them, the base windows of the apps load but the contents of the windows is blank. Although the apps appear to work the (broken) drawing is really slow.

I have upgraded all my X packages from here

http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/xorg-server-backports/
http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/ati/

But the problem still exists.

Here's the contents of my xorg.conf which I generated with

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg -phigh

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

i suggest you, to disable desktop effects for good, since, this was solved by an upgrade i'm closing this bug as fix releases, and changing the package to compiz, if you disagree with this, feel free to re-open the bug.

Thanks
