I have this exact problem with a 3-screen Radeon HD 6800 setup. I suspect it's also related to the fact that unity/gnome3 look horrible (no 3d?) which i'm not as bothered about, but just in case it's relevant. glxinfo says that I have direct rendering so i'm not sure what else to check or even what to try to fix?
