I've noticed monitor signals don't travel well in really long VGA cables and _some_ laptops seem more susceptible than others to the problem (this is under Windows to projectors). This doesn't rule out the possibility of being able to workaround the issue but once you get a cable over 2.5 metres you can start seeing some strange issues and things like signal boosters start to help...
