I have the same problem on my Dell Inspiron 1300 with Ubuntu 8.10, this problem happens in Kernel 2.6.27-7.16
Kernel 2.6.27-8.17 fixes the problem, but in the recently released 2.6.27-9.19 the problem has reappeared.
